For the last couple of years, since I started this blog and its predecessor, I have marked the first day of Spring by posting photos of the flowers on the peach tree. But not this year, there are no flowers yet. There are plenty of buds so in a day or two there will be lots of flowers. This is probably the result of having the coldest August for more than 60 years.
The only fruit tree flowering is the Apricot so here is a shot of it.
Winter is showing that it is not over yet with cold and wet days on the east coast. After a mild season this year it is going out with a bang. We have had several cold days and even some snow on the mountains west of Sydney.
Despite that it is not all gloom. I always enjoy the splash of colour that appears this time of year. Azaleas flower and other plants follow. It is almost like nature saying "hold on, not long to go. Winter is almost over"
I'm not sure what most people would call it but I prefer to think of it as grabbing the opportunities that present themselves. Once again I set out to take some photos and the one I like the best is not the one I went looking for.
I knew a steam train was running today so that was my target. But while I was waiting for it I noticed a thistle growing by the track and the bees that were feasting on it. So I quickly grabbed some shots. Not as sharp as I would like as they were hand held and not with a macro lens either. Still here it is.
Oh and the train did arrive. The locos were moving to Valley Heights depot ready for the weekend's activities.
Note to those in the Sydney area. The Mt Victoria Train Festival is on this weekend with displays and events all over Mt Victoria. See here for details. Included in the events are steam trains rides from both Mt Victoria and Katoomba. Should be a fun weekend.
It is the first day of Spring here. Trees that slept through Winter are showing signs of life. It is a time of new beginings. It was also twelve months ago today I posted the first photo on my Blog, not here but at BN. So to celebrate both events I am posting some photos taken early this morning that are similar to the original post.
A rose is a suitable gift to when making an apology so perhaps this image is apt as I won't be posting much here over the next couple of weeks. I am busy helping organise the Hawkesbury Model & Hobby Show (those in the Sydney area please drop by and say hello). I won't have much time to prepare photos but intend to drop by and check out what everyone else is doing as often as I can.
I have always admired these flowers that appear on a large Cacti growing in my yard. The plants are tough, they receive no care yet grow well and flower profusely during the warmer months. The flowers appear during the night and are at their best in the early morning. They die when the sun hits them. They are huge too, around 20 cm across.
Our country has been built on immigration, technically everyone here is one. The first arrived at least 40,000 years ago. Many brought a little of themselves that added to the mix to create a greater whole. Of course there were some who had only a negative impact.
Not all the immigrants were people. There are many famous plants or animals that seemed a good idea at the time but in the long run brought only damage. Occasionally there is one that makes itself at home and repays many times the efforts of those responsible. This is one of those, the tulip has made the Southern Highlands of NSW home to such an extent it has its own festival every spring. Its beauty brings tourists to the area in large numbers. It is one immigrant that has had a very positive effect on its adopted home.
